Notes on Lamentations 1–2:
This book is hard to read. All of the down and gloom warnings of the prophets become present tense reality. If any of the Scriptures ever should have been unnecessary, Lamentations would be it! The whole thing was foreseen and predicted.
But the people, the priests, and their princes would not listen!
Key Reflections:
1. Lamentations was avoidable!
2. God keeps His word – He is faithful!
3. Lamentations describes the effects of stubborn sin.
Don’t be mistaken when you read this book and see a harsh, vengeful God. What you see in this carnage and tragedy is the reign of sin. God uncovered what men had tried to sanitize and ignore. The tragedy was more merciful than the further degradation of sin!
4. Preach harder.
We don’t preach anything close to the intensity of the prophets. How can we stand to preach so softly when we know God’s heart? And when we know the consequences of a people who are hard hearted and don’t listen?
5. Prepare for rejection and hardship.
History indicates man is sinful and
proud of it.
